Being a native Atlantan I know of Dr. Louis Sullivan and have seen him at events around town. He is always positive and very charming demeanor, but I did not really know his life’s story.
In his concise memoir, Breaking Ground My Life in Medicine, Sullivan delves back to is roots in Blakely, Georgia and the adventures that eventually took him to the White House.
Since a young age, Dr. Sullivan wanted to become a doctor. His model was his hometown doctor, Dr. Joseph Griffin whom he saw as one that had magical powers. Dr. Griffin was also a rare black doctor that had respect of the community.
Sullivan speaks of his parents and how his father was always seeking justice and what was right in the era of Jim Crow. As a funeral director, his father had a calling to help families during their time of need and his hearse served as an ambulance for the black community.
Throughout the book several important themes weave in and out. Sullivan was always a good student of books and people. He got along well no matter what circumstance and was also a trail blazer for blacks.
The book also details the establishment of the Morehouse school of Medicine and how his years as an undergraduate set a high bar for reach his dreams.
This book is an inspiration and insightful story about a man whose tireless work makes the world a healthier place.

Excellent Book!
I haven't gotten through the entire book yet, but it is fascinating. I first read about Louis Sullivan in "The Morehouse Mystique" and knew this was someone who was not only interesting, but inspirational, as well. What a life. I was never someone who enjoyed biographies, or autobiographies, but knowing where a person comes from can enrich our lives and set an example for the rest of us.
