This book is first of all absolutely beautiful, both the cover and the story are amazing and really get you choked up, if not cry a couple of times. I read this book on watt pad the first time and fell in love with it instantly, when Ashley announced that it was being published I did backflips and had a happy dance, I soon after preordered it and when it came, it was absolutely gorgeous, the colours that were chosen for the cover are just amazing, the book itself is probably one of my favorite books to date. If your looking at this book and are worried about the book being a lot like the watt pad version because you read it there and don't want it to be a repeat of something you've already read, I can assure you that there are quite a few new and amazing chapters added to the story and it's also a great book to just have around to read over and over again, I am personally obsessed with this book and I recommend this to ALL people because it is not a fanfiction and it is not a genre that is just directed towards girls or boys to read, I feel like both genders could connect with this book and genuinely enjoy this book. There are some rediculously adorable chapters in this book that you just have to read and I know you will connect and fall in love with each and every character in the book! So I definitely would call this one a must read!Tags : Amazon.com: Remember to Forget, Revised and Expanded Edition: from Wattpad sensation @_smilelikeniall (Blink) (9780310751717): Ashley Royer: Books,Ashley Royer,Remember to Forget, Revised and Expanded Edition: from Wattpad sensation @_smilelikeniall (Blink),Blink,0310751713,Romance - Clean & Wholesome,Depression in adolescence,Depression, Mental,Depression, Mental;Juvenile fiction.,Maine,Maine;Juvenile fiction.,Single parents,Single parents;Juvenile fiction.,Teenage boys,Teenagers,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Social Themes - General (see also headings under Family),TEEN'S FICTION - GENERAL,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Clean & Wholesome,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Depression,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Young Adult FictionRomance - Clean & Wholesome
Remember to Forget Revised and Expanded Edition from Wattpad sensation _smilelikeniall Blink Ashley Royer Books Reviews
Loved this book! You go through a range of emotions while reading. First you don't like the main character and then you feel so sad for him once you understand his depression and issues. The young author does a fantastic job drawing you in and you feel that the story is real, the characters seem real and she does a great job making the reader fall in love with each of the characters! Have read this more than one time and just love it! I must admit, it made me cry on more than one occasion. Moms, don't need to worry about any profanity, embarrassing or adult content. It does deal with teen issues of depression, loss, anxiety, love and hope but also shows how friends and family can help guide you through tough times. Recommend.
Every so often, I get in the mood for realistic YA dealing with mental health issues. This one fit the criteria nicely as its the story of a 17-year-old who is depressed and hasn't talked since his girlfriend's funeral. He moves from Australia to live with his dad in Maine and (naturally) meets an interesting girl...
Overall, I found this a great picture of someone suffering from depression and I enjoyed the friendships as well. I also appreciated that Levi had numerous setbacks in his recovery, which added to the realism. However, the story did seem to get repetitive at times, with the same events (make friends, push them away, get better, get worse) seeming to happen over and over. This isn't a long novel- just under 300 pages- but at times it felt like it was dragging on forever. Also, I've read a lot of novels with plots similar to this one, so that might have added to my overall "this was okay but not amazing" feeling.
I must say, though, as a first novel from a 17-year-old, I was very impressed! I will definitely check out any future books she writes.
Ps Apparently this started as a Fan Fiction of 5 Seconds of Summer (I've heard the name but never listened to them). This explains the Mitchell kid whose presence I felt was kind of random; there are four band members, and the author already had the other three represented (Levi/Luke, Caleb/Calum, Aiden/Ashton) and needed the fourth member (Michael) involved somehow.
When I first came across a post mentioning this book, I admit I was intrigued. A teenaged Wattpad author, having their work published? I was definitely curious to see what the story was about, but I don't think I was expecting to be at all impressed when I picked it up (given how many teens tend to write.)
"Remember To Forget" pleasantly surprised me and made me eat my words. I'm very impressed with Ashley Royer's writing skills. (I see a lot of reviews on here mentioning that the original edition prior to the book's revision and expansion, wasn't so great. I think that for what it's worth, the extra work to revise the book probably included extra work on Royer's part to really improve, and if that's the case she did so very well!) The concept behind the story--guy loses girlfriend, becomes depressed, needs a change of scenery, finds someone new who reminds him of late girlfriend and causes him confused emotions--isn't something I've often seen explored with a male protagonist. Typically that is reserved for a whimsical, lovelorn female protagonist, so that already was a refreshing change of pace. The story is a very quick read despite there being a prologue and 47 subsequent chapters; on average, it might take a day and a half to get through. It is also very clean in its overall subject matter, with no swearing, no heavy sexual themes, and very little mention of alcohol and drug use (main character smokes for a period of time, but gives it up after a while.) The message of the story is very positive and the book ends on an uplifting, hopeful note.
My criticisms are very few. One deals with the interactions between the various teenage cast. At times it feels almost unrealistic due to the very PG nature of the writing, and doesn't always flow very well in terms of organic dialogue. This stays consistent throughout the book, so you get used to it, but it still comes across as awkwardly nonviable in regards to most actual teenagers. Another is that the pacing seems awkward at times, though that's forgivable considering the author's age. I also found it difficult to figure out where the story's hook was.
My final criticism concerns the subject of the protagonist's depression over the loss of his girlfriend; I've seen many other reviews criticizing this aspect of the book, saying Levi's emotional state comes across as bratty, whiny, and not totally realistic in regards to actual grief over losing a loved one. Personally I think for what it's worth, Ashley handled this very well considering she's writing from a teenage perspective, and the amount of survivor's guilt we eventually see at the root of Levi's emotional state. My only concern is that I think she could have done a little more research into the therapy and coping aspects concerning grief, depression, and survivor's guilt. I'm not sure how much (if any) research she put into those matters, because if she did, it doesn't entirely show well in the interactions between Levi and his therapist. If she were to revise the book again in the future, this is the one thing I especially recommend that she work on.
In conclusion, I do have to say that I did enjoy this book. It took me a while to get into the story and it definitely has some flaws, but the topics it handles and the story it tells about moving on after mourning lost love is not something I would ever have expected a teenaged writer to address, let alone make the theme of their story! Ashley Royer deserves to be commended, supported, and encouraged for her work, because writing is no mean feat for anyone, much less someone so young! Kudos to her for getting "Remember To Forget" published, and I look forward to seeing if she ventures into more original stories in the future!
